Getting a Dragon to Norway

As Dog indicated in the We Got Out of Colorado post, I have had a busy last few days. Let me fill in the details on the two day journey to my assignment in Norway.

My initial flight out of DIA was at 0100 bound for Miami where I was scheduled for a medical screening by the cruise company. I arrived in the A.M. and took a cab over for my medical at 0930. Miami taxi was $55 by the way! I’m hoping that my checked bag would eventually join me in Norway. After my medical I had to go to a different office to have them sign off on the medical I just completed. My next flight out wasn’t until 1800, so I had time to kill. The lovely people at Roasters ‘N Toasters were kind enough to let me just rest at my booth after breakfast to kill some time. Back at the airport I met a lovely man who I had a great conversation with. Thanks for keeping me company Tony.

So from Miami I flew to Atlanta where I had a 1.5 hour layover before boarding an overnight flight to Amsterdam. The trans-atlantic flight was on a huge plane that was 10 seats across and had at least 60 rows. I arrived in Amsterdam where my layover was just one hour, before flying to Alesund airport in Norway. The airport for Alesund is actually three islands away from Alesund. My driver picked me up and drove me to the hotel in Alesund. Along the way we had to traverse two tunnels that ran along the bottom of the ocean. The Norwegian engineering is very impressive as the Valderoy Tunnel is 4.2 km and the Ellingsoy Tunnel is nearly 3.5 km. That was my first trip in a car at the bottom of the ocean for sure.

After a trip that took two days and covered over 7400 miles I finally arrived in Alesund, Norway. After dropping off my bags at the hotel and enjoying a bottle of Maxim Gorkiy Imperial Stout by Geiranger Bryggeri I decided to explore a bit. It was a beautiful day and I’d just been cooped up for two days so I took the opportunity to hike the 418 steps to the Aksla Viewpoint. It was amazing and Norway did not disappoint for the short time I was there. The weather was lovely, the views were stunning, the people were friendly, the beer was great, and there was a cat in a backpack with a window.

On Saturday the 15th I boarded the Island Princess and began my new adventure as a cruise ship officer. That is a story yet to come and will no doubt offer many future updates. Thanks for listening and following along. I hope I’ll be able to post more in the near future and update Bob Talks in His Sleep as well.
